Five Reasons to Fall in Love with Epsom Salts

For many generations we have enjoyed the therapeutic benefits of Epsom salts. Back in the good old days we indulged more often in an epsom salt bath but in modern day, the bath has been replaced by the shower and we have lost the daily intake of beautiful boost to our systems.

Here are five reasons to get acquainted with this powerhouse of nutrients!

1. Epsom Salts help you sleep

And we can all do with a bit more of that! Stress and anxiety depletes our bodies of magnesium. Stress is something that's almost impossible to avoid in our busy lifestyles however we can help ourselves by ensuring our magnesium levels are at an optimum. Magnesium helps to relieve stress by promoting the production of serotonin (the stuff that regulates your moods, appetite, digestion, anxiety and sleep) and reducing cortisol (the stress hormone) Now that has to make you want to take the plunge!

2. Epsom Salts help you recover from exercise

Magnesium is needed for muscle rejuvenation. We all love to hit the gym, go for a run or push ourselves a little from time to time. Having a soak will help with muscle function, reduce inflammation and regulate muscle contraction (thereby reducing cramps) through maintaining your electrolyte balance and promoting muscular and skeletal relaxation.

3. Epsom salts are great for the hair!

Epsom salts added to your hair products will help decrease excess oil, which makes your hair look limp and flat. Mix equal parts of epsom salts with your conditioner, massage into your hair and let it sit for 10-20 minutes before rinsing out. You can also add a tablespoon of conditioner to your magnesium oil to use it for a natural hair spray!

4. Epsom Salts help soften and smooth your skin

If you have dry itchy skin, or more serious skin conditions such as eczema, the mineral rich bath water can help soften, smooth and soothe your skin, acting as a mild exfoliator. Magnesium helps to eliminate toxins and heavy metals from the body, allowing the skin, the body's largest organ, to retain moisture more efficiently. Which can in turn help to reduce wrinkles!

5. Epsom salts are good for bone health

Magnesium is one of the crucial minerals essential for building strong and healthy bones along with calcium and vitamin D3. 50-60% of your body's magnesium is found in your bones!

Epsom salts absorb easily through the skin....

going directly to where it's needed rather than getting lost in the digestive tract as can happen when taking oral supplements.

So when you come home tired from a long day at work; kick off your shoes, grab a large basin and fill it with warm water adding a few spoons of Epsom salts (or better still use your favourite Freya's Nourishment bath salts) and plonk yourself in front of the TV! Now that’s multilevel relaxation! While you may have a healthy diet and get enough magnesium through your green vegetables, legumes and nuts your ability to switch off and decompress is just as important so as not to deplete your reserves. So do yourself a favour, take the plunge and do your physical and mental health a kindness.
