PART ONE: Four essential oils for your home cleaning kit

You love a clean home, but you’re not crazy about chemical-laden products. Sound familiar? The great news is, there are lots of ways to get your home environment squeaky-clean using essential oils. Here are four to add to your cleaning kit – and next week, I’ll share my best essential oil cleaning recipes.

  1. Lemon oil

This is my number one essential oil for your cleaning kit. Why? Well, it’s great for removing stains and spots on clothes, it brightens and whitens and is a natural disinfectant. It can cut through grease and grime on stainless steel, get rid of gooey residue from kids stickers, and remove tarnish from silver. It can also deter spiders and makes a great natural floor cleaner.

  1. Tea Tree oil

I love this oil – it’s easy to find and really useful in cleansing and purifying your home, thanks to its antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties. It makes a fresh-smelling surface cleaner in the kitchen, and can keep the shower fresh and mildew-free. You can also add a few drops to a heavy laundry load – it busts out bacteria and has natural deodorising properties. Oh, and because it stimulates the immune system it’s beneficial for your health while you clean – rather than holding your breath and choking on toxic chemicals!

  1. Lavender oil

We all know lavender smells gorgeous and a few drops of this oil in a burner can be a great natural air freshener. However, did you know this essential oil is also antibacterial, antiviral, antiseptic and anti-fungal? It’s great mixed with white vinegar and used as a household cleaner (it’s a pretty relaxing scent to clean with, too). Plus mixed with water in a spray bottle it can be used to freshen up cushions and bed linen, the dog’s basket or as a skin refresher after a hard gym workout.

  1. Eucalyptus oil

Take a whiff of this! I mean that in the nicest possible way, because eucalyptus oil is a brilliant disinfectant and natural deodoriser, as well as being anti-bacterial and antiseptic. It’s a non-toxic way to clean sinks, drains and toilets and can get rid of scuff marks on floors. It can also remove grease, grass stains, pen marks, deter moths and silverfish and freshen bins. You can also use it to clean stainless steel – or even remove chewing gum from hair!
